Passau, Germany — August 13, 2025
UCY Technologies GmbH and Specim have been working side-by-side to bring hyperspectral imaging from the lab to the toughest industrial sorting lines.
UCY builds modular, AI-driven optical sorting systems designed for waste and PET bottle applications, quality inspection, and flake sorting. Our A-series platform combines advanced optics, sensors, and in-house algorithms with a high degree of modularity—so integrators and plant operators can tailor throughput, pneumatics, and detection to their exact needs. Founded in 2016 to raise PET recycling efficiency, we’ve kept that mission at the center of every product decision.
Why Specim fits UCY
Specim’s FX-series hyperspectral cameras offer unified spectral calibration across cameras of the same type, which makes it easier to transfer models between lines and devices—exactly what multi-plant operators need. Their guidance for dusty environments and available protective casings align with the realities of high-throughput recycling halls.
What that means on the line
Hyperspectral imaging identifies materials by their chemical signature rather than by look—crucial when visually similar items must be separated at speed. In recycling, this enables cleaner fractions across plastics, textiles, paper, and more, improving purity and yield. With FX-series cameras (e.g., FX17 in SWIR), Specim continues to demonstrate applications from plastics sorting to microplastic detection—capabilities we can bring into UCY platforms where they create customer value.
Beyond bottles: quality control & surface checks
For customers who need both sorting and in-line quality inspection, hyperspectral imaging also supports color and surface characterization—texture, gloss, stains, and coating thickness—enabling consistent output quality with fewer manual checks.
Looking ahead
As Specim expands its portfolio (for example, previewing the SX25 SWIR camera in May 2025), we see new opportunities to further shrink cycle times from “sample to stable model” and to add tougher detection tasks into the same UCY platform footprint. Our teams will continue co-engineering integrations that are robust, repeatable, and serviceable on site.
